CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Sophia held the basket close to her and tried to act humble. It was hard for a cocky pirate king not to stride straight up to the guards and kill them both. She had thought about it as an option, but she didn't want the entire garrison up her ass if they caused too much noise. Nico was going to find a boat, and it was her job to get the inventor and his daughter to the water.

"Good evening, sirs. I'm here to do the night clean," Sophia said, keeping her eyes downcast.

"What happened to Katja?" one guard asked gruffly.

"She was unwell and asked me to fill in for her," Sophia said, not looking up. "I'm a hard worker, sir. I will—"

"Sure, fine. Go on in," he replied, opening the gate for her.

Sophia hurried through the gardens to the back door to the laundry and kitchen areas. She spotted another three guards on patrol around the gardens. They all seemed bored and relaxed, smoking cigarettes and talking about sweethearts back home.

Maybe the inventor wasn't the troublemaking type, and they didn't have to worry about him running away? Frederico Orsini was a small, round-faced man with thinning hair who had given Sophia no trouble the whole time she had been kidnapping him. His teenage daughter, Maria, had told them they would all burn in hell. She was her genius father's keeper from what Sophia could tell. She would have to find Maria first and get her to convince him to come willingly. Without her help, Frederico would keep writing his calculations and be lost in his own little world.

In the kitchen, Sophia abandoned the basket. She arranged a plate of grapes, cheese, and bread and poured some port wine. She shotted it and poured another. She hoped Nico was okay and hadn't been arrested already from asking dumb questions of the wrong people.

He's safer than you are right now, idiot, she reminded herself. She was discovering that she didn't like him out of her sight for long. It made the beast inside of her uneasy. Sophia thought it was pathetic, considering he was still angry with her. Her wrist burned where he had kissed it which reminded her that he might be coming around again. She couldn't think about kisses or anything they could mean. She had a job to do.

Sophia carried the plates, noting the two soldiers in the front of the house. They might be problematic. Sophia walked up the curving flight of stairs. She heard a woman singing and followed the sound. She tapped on the door. It was yanked open.

"What?" Maria demanded. Her eyes went wide. "You!"

"Shut up! I'm here to help," Sophia said, pushing her way into the room. "Keep your voice down unless you want your Varangian keepers up our asses."

Maria's eyes flared with rage. "What are you doing here?"

"Isn't obvious? I'm busting you and your dad out of here," Sophia said, putting down her decoy plates of supper.

"You sold us to them and
